“What started from a feeling of rage turned into a profound quest inside the arches of Elephant Road, one of the few remaining spots where Elephant & Castle’s Latin American diasporas are still thriving. The relationships I formed there led to a film that I see as a love letter to what these communities had built in the famous shopping centre, now demolished to give way to luxury flats, a new UAL campus and a Westfield-type development.”

A wave of regeneration is hitting London’s working-class boroughs. South of the river, the demolition of Elephant & Castle’s shopping centre has uprooted the community who made it their own. As they navigate an uncertain future, they carry with them the legacy of a place that once felt like home.

ABOUT



Elena Escalante is a Spanish creative producer and director with a passion for storytelling that transcends the medium. Her work on and off screen often deals with migration and spatial justice.

She has produced work for the likes of Netflix, the BBC and the British Library.

As a director, Elephant Families (2025), her debut documentary about the Latin American diasporas amid gentrification in South London, premiered at the BFI London Film Festival in 2025.

She believes in making films that challenge past beliefs and start new conversations.
